MIGRAIN: Hesmondhalgh - The Cultural Industries

  1) What does the term 'Cultural Industries' actually refer to? That the media has influence on use whatever we like it or not. 2) What does Hesmondhalgh identify regarding the societies in which the cultural industries are highly profitable? He points out that societies with profitable cultural industries (e.g. USA, UK) tend to be dominated by large companies, have minimal government regulation and significant inequality between rich and poor. 3) Why do some media products offer ideologies that challenge capitalism or inequalities in society? because they are made for artistic value not for profit. 4) Look at page 2 of the fact sheet. What are the problems that Hesmondhalgh identifies with regards to the cultural industries? • Risky business • Creativity versus commerce • High production costs and low reproduction costs • Semi-public goods; the need to create scarcity 5) Why are so many cultural industries a 'risky business' for the companies involved? Industries: Ownership and control blog tasks

Media conglomerate research 1) Type up your  research notes  from the lesson - what did you find out about your allocated media conglomerate? Selection of companies: Alphabet,  The Walt Disney Company,  National Amusements,  Meta,  News Corp,  Time Warner, Comcast. If you were absent or didn't have time in the lesson to make these notes, research  any one  of the companies above and find examples of all the terminology outlined in the notes at the start of this blogpost. 2) Do you agree that governments should prevent media conglomerates from becoming too dominant? Write an argument that looks at both sides of this debate. Well America is all about freedom and capitalism so from that side yea they should be allowed to do whatever they want its their money. now from a realistic side of course governments need to prevent  media conglomerates from becoming too dominant as companies should not have more power then half the countries in the world. there needs to be a limit on how powerf

Audience theory 2: blog tasks

  1) Social learning theory has been criticised for simplifying the causes of violence in society. Do you think the media is responsible for anti-social behaviour and violence? Well it's hard to say, one hand you have the s ocial learning theory which I do mostly agree with as kids are very impressionable at their age so if the social media is promoting violent stuff kids may pick it up and adopt it to their  behaviour. But then there is the part where parents are to blame as its their and only their responsibility to raise their kids to be functioning, disciplined and respectful members of society. 2) How is social learning theory relevant in the digital age? Are young people now learning behaviour from social media and the internet? Give examples. In my opinion it is very relevant as with the internet parents have less control over their kids learning and development so kids take role models from the social media and blindly follow them without understanding why they follow them

Feedback

  1) Type up your feedback in  full  (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential). WWW-this is a solid assessment with three answers in the mid-level of the mark scheme. You show good focus on the texts so now need to work on exam technique to open up the higher levels/grades. EBI-More narrative theory and adding genre theory would halp with Q1 and Q3. for Q2 we will work on social and 2) Read  the mark scheme for this assessment  carefully. Identify at least  one  potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. Q1) Excellent and judicious use of the theoretical framework (media language & narrative theory) To analyse how poster uses narrative codes. Q2) Excellent and accurate understanding of the theoretical framework that is demonstrated by consistently appropriate explanation of the connotations in the products. 3) Read this  exemplar response  from a previous Year 12 (an A grade) - note this was a slightly di

Hypodermic needle model 1) Read this  Mail Online article about the effects of videogames . How does this article link to the hypodermic needle model?  Can't open it, the link doesn't  work for me. 2) How does coverage of the Talk Talk hacking case (see Daily Mail front page below) link to the hypodermic needle model? Why might someone  criticise  this front page?  Can't lie sir, I have been looking at this front page for a while and I'm still confused about it. 3) What do  you  think of the hypodermic needle theory? Do audiences believe everything they see in the media? It is a simple theory but it's very true. Most thing the mainstream media "feeds" us are covers for lies that they don't want us to know. Most people aren't critical thinkers and believe things people with "power"(influencers of any kind) say without thinking twice about it. Two-step flow model 1) Summarise the two-step flow model. What is an opinion leader? Somebody that

MIGRAIN: Narrative

  1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.  Equilibrium- Primatologist Davis Okoye shares an unshakeable bond with George, an extraordinarily intelligent, silver back gorilla that's been in his care since birth.  disequilibrium  - When a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong, it causes George, a wolf and a reptile to grow to a monstrous size. As the mutated beasts embark on a path of destruction, Okoye teams up with a discredited genetic engineer and the military to secure an antidote and prevent a global catastrophe.   new equilibrium- The other mutants are defeated and they go back to the their normal lives, well as normal as they can be when George looks like King Kong. 2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a  clip  on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers th
