MIGRAIN: Narrative

 1) Give an example from film or television that uses Todorov's narrative structure of equilibrium, disequilibrium and new equilibrium.

Equilibrium-Primatologist Davis Okoye shares an unshakeable bond with George, an extraordinarily intelligent, silver back gorilla that's been in his care since birth.

disequilibrium -When a rogue genetic experiment goes wrong, it causes George, a wolf and a reptile to grow to a monstrous size. As the mutated beasts embark on a path of destruction, Okoye teams up with a discredited genetic engineer and the military to secure an antidote and prevent a global catastrophe.

new equilibrium- The other mutants are defeated and they go back to the their normal lives, well as normal as they can be when George looks like King Kong.

2) Complete the activity on page 1 of the Factsheet: find a clip on YouTube of the opening of a new TV drama series (season 1, episode 1). Embed the clip in your blog and write an analysis of the narrative markers that help establish setting, character and plot.
a)Give a distance shot of the sun rising
b)By showing easily recognisable places, in this case the Big Ben
c)Have traditional families

3) Provide three different examples from film or television of characters that fit Propp's hero character role.
a) Capetian America
b) Spider man/Peter Parker
c)Harry Potter

4) Give an example of a binary opposition.
Good and evil, light and dark, hot and cold

5) What example is provided in the Factsheet for the way narratives can emphasise dominant ideologies and values?
The victor frequently stands in for the prevailing beliefs and ideals in our society. In a crime drama, when the policeman apprehends the criminal, the concept of the importance of law and order is highlighted. In romantic comedies, heterosexual partnerships and monogamy are emphasised when the female wins the guy over. In traditional literature, the guy usually wins the girl and crime doesn't usually pay.

6) Why do enigma and action codes (Barthes) offer gratifications for audiences?
It builds up tension which is then released at the climax which allows us to know everything.
It builds up excitement and keeps us on the edge of our seats.

7) Write a one-sentence summary of the four different types of TV narrative:
  • Episodic narrative (the series) a story that is told through a series of episodes,
  • Overarching narrative (the serial)
  • Mixed narrative
  • Multi-strand overlapping narrative (soap narrative)
8) How does the Factsheet suggest adverts use narrative?
In advertising the idea of the problem and resolution being a must.
